Exhibitions

CLAS Exhibitions celebrate the artistry, skill, and diversity of calligraphy and lettering. From national touring showcases to annual themed exhibitions, these events highlight both traditional and contemporary approaches to the lettering arts. Carefully curated, each exhibition brings together the work of established professionals and emerging artists, offering inspiration and insight to audiences across the UK and beyond.

Living Letters Exhibitions

CLAS has a long tradition of curating travelling exhibitions that highlight both traditional and contemporary lettering. A recent example is Living Letters VII: Hand Made Letters (2024), a touring showcase marking the 30th anniversary of CLAS. This exhibition featured new work from both national and international lettering artists and travelled across four UK venues. Previous Living Letters exhibitions have spotlighted innovative approaches, historic traditions, and new directions in calligraphy, continuing to inspire audiences and celebrate the breadth of the lettering arts.

Art & the Letter

The Art & the Letter Exhibition is an annual showcase held both at the CLAS Creative (formerly AGM Day) and online. Open to calligraphers and lettering artists of all levels, it offers participants the opportunity to submit one free entry, whether digitally, physically, or as a combination of both. Themes are announced in the summer, with submissions due in January.

Every entry receives feedback from a panel of respected calligraphers, and selected works may be awarded special recognition in the form of a certificate and mention. Physical submissions are also automatically entered into the Brian Walker Prize, a £100 award given in memory of the late Brian Walker.

Exhibition Catalogues

Printed catalogues accompany many CLAS exhibitions, showcasing the work of participating artists and preserving each event for future reference. These catalogues are available to purchase through the CLAS Shop, offering members and enthusiasts alike the chance to collect, study, and enjoy the lettering arts at home.
