About Us

The Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) is a charity dedicated to promoting the practice, study, and enjoyment of calligraphy and the lettering arts.

Founded in 1994, CLAS has grown into an international community of calligraphers, lettering artists, tutors, and enthusiasts. Whether you are picking up a pen for the first time or are already established in the field, you’ll find a place here.

CLAS is a properly constituted, non-profit organisation, led entirely by volunteers who give their time and expertise to support the lettering arts. Full details can be found on the Charity Commission website.

Our Mission

At CLAS we aim to:

  • Encourage the study and practice of western calligraphy in all its forms.

  • Support the teaching of calligraphy through clear standards and tutor accreditation.

  • Share a wider appreciation of lettering through exhibitions, publications, and events.

  • Build an open and welcoming community where skills, creativity, and tradition are valued.

You can explore the benefits of membership to see how CLAS supports learners, teachers, and enthusiasts.

Elevating Calligraphy & Lettering

For over 30 years, CLAS has been supporting people at every stage of their calligraphy journey:

  • Beginners – friendly introductions, courses, and resources.

  • Developing learners – workshops, exhibitions, and mentoring.

  • Professionals – accreditation, teaching opportunities, and awards.

Building Community & Awareness

CLAS is more than a society — it is a network of people who share a love of letters. We:

  • Host exhibitions across the UK.

  • Publish The Edge magazine and CLASnews.

  • Run LiveOnline courses with experienced tutors.

  • Support local affiliated groups.

  • Keep registers of tutors and speakers to connect groups with experts.

Our festivals and exhibitions not only showcase calligraphy at its best, but also create experiences that stay with visitors long after — you can read what people say about CLAS.

Maintaining Teaching Excellence

The CLAS Academic Standards Board (CASB) sets and maintains the standards that underpin our education programmes.

CASB oversees:

  • Accredited Tutors

  • Certificate of Calligraphy

  • Diploma in Calligraphy

  • Fellowship applications

  • Specialist Skills Awards

Who We Are

CLAS is a volunteer-led society. Everything we do — from organising events and exhibitions to publishing the Edge and maintaining teaching standards — is made possible by members who give their time and skills freely.

Our committees, editors, and officers work together to keep the society active, welcoming, and supportive for everyone with an interest in calligraphy and the lettering arts. All roles are carried out by volunteers who contribute their expertise and enthusiasm to sustain and grow the CLAS community.

Many of our most experienced practitioners are recognised as CLAS Fellows.
