what you can access through CLAS

CLAS offers diverse opportunities for acquiring new skills and refining existing ones.

learning with CLAS

CLAS offers a structured and inspiring pathway for learning calligraphy, supporting learners from absolute beginners through to advanced practitioners and Fellows of the society.

certificate of calligraphy

The CLAS Certificate of Calligraphy is the first step on the CLAS Ladder of Progress—a valuable starting point for those beginning their calligraphy journey. It is a supportive way to gauge your progress and gain recognition for your proficiency in basic scripts.

LiveOnline courses

CLAS offers a wide range of educational opportunities, including online courses suitable for all levels—from complete beginners to experienced calligraphers. These courses are designed to support progression through the CLAS certification pathways.

national diploma in calligraphy

The CLAS National Diploma in Calligraphy is designed for committed CLAS members who are dedicated students of Western calligraphy. It is not a taught course, but a respected certification that recognises the standard of work you have achieved through personal study and practice.

You can progress through three levels of recognised achievement:

  • Foundation Level: This level lays a solid foundation in core calligraphic principles and techniques.
  • Intermediate Level: Build on your skills by studying Roman Capitals alongside two additional scripts.
  • Advanced Level: You will present six assessed pieces and complete a sustained personal project that demonstrates both technical skill and creative maturity.

To support your progress at every stage, CLAS offers a wealth of online resources. These include instructional videos, a gallery of calligraphy at different levels, a directory of recommended courses, and access to experienced mentors who can offer guidance and encouragement throughout your journey.

specialist skills awards

The Specialist Skills Awards Courses offer in-depth learning in a range of calligraphic and related disciplines beyond the basics. Each course is thoughtfully designed and delivered by CLAS Accredited Tutors and teaching Fellows, ensuring high-quality, expert-led instruction that supports your continued development and enjoyment of the lettering arts.

teaching through CLAS

CLAS is dedicated to promoting excellence in the teaching of calligraphy and to recognising tutors who demonstrate both a high level of artistic skill and a strong understanding of effective teaching practices.

teaching calligraphy programme

CLAS offers a short online Basic Teaching Skills course, as well as a Teaching Calligraphy Specialist Skills Award programme which is a practical, hands-on course delivered through four weekend workshops. It is designed to support aspiring tutors in developing both confidence and competence in the classroom. This programme provides a solid foundation for those looking to teach calligraphy with clarity, creativity, and confidence.

tutor accreditation

CLAS offers applicants the opportunity to become a CLAS Accredited Tutor via two routes, depending on whether the applicant already has a teaching qualification or not.  Successful tutors can advertise their courses through CLAS, teach LiveOnline courses or at the CLAS Festival, and are listed in the Tutors and Talkers directory.

tutors & talkers

The CLAS Tutors and Talkers List is a directory of accredited tutors and experienced calligraphers available to deliver workshops and talks. It includes contact details, topics offered, and fee information—ideal for groups and organisers seeking skilled presenters in the lettering arts.
