Calligraphy and Lettering are serious artforms. Each can be
thought of as the beauty of speech made visible through the art of the hand.
Both can contribute to graphic design, typographic design, the book arts and
signwork. The Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society is open to anybody and
everybody who enjoys calligraphy and lettering. CLAS extends a warm welcome
to new members, whether old or young, beginner or expert.
Calligraphy is an
enjoyable hobby which can even become your full-time career as an artist.
It's never too late to learn, and never to soon to begin. The best way to
make real progress is by joining the Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society.
Please look through these pages to discover more about calligraphy and lettering
and about the real help you can get through the Society and its activities.
Writing and lettering are everywhere around us and are a very visual part of
the fabric of our everyday lives. The study of writing and lettering and the
practice and finest execution of its skills can be carried to the highest levels
of art. The art and cultures of China, Japan and the Islamic world place the
value of their calligraphy on the highest plane.
Historically, the Roman alphabet
in the richness of its manifestations has a pedigree second to none. The origins
go back into prehistory and ever since that amazing breakthrough into literacy,
people have been getting and giving aesthetic pleasure by marrying their inventiveness
and imagination with the limitless creative potential of the raw material, the
letters of the alphabet. It is not only the content of the words but the way
they have looked which has carried culture forwards.
