CLAS Regional Meetings

On 23 October 2011 Oxford Scribes hosted a very exciting day with the theme East Meets West for the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society. Honoured Fellow of CLAS Dr Manny Ling was the guest speaker and gave a presentation Calligraphy Across Boundaries.

There were demonstrations of Japanese calligraphy, heraldic painting, Islamic arabesque design, willow pattern relief printing, brush lettering and Chinese flower painting. There was also a Haiku competition with many original entries. Sales tables, suppliers of paper, books and all calligraphic material had a very busy day. Raffle prizes included work by Manny Ling and the original East Meets West black and white logo created by Tim Noad. During the day Tim had painted a richly coloured gouache and shell gold version of the logo as a demonstration piece and generously offered it for an extra raffle prize at the last minute – a very lucky lady was overwhelmed.

The day, which was attended by almost 200 visitors, was dedicated to Isabelle Spencer, an accomplished calligrapher and much loved vice-President of Oxford Scribes who died in September aged 87 and who had an enormous input into the Regional Day planning.
